LOW ENERGY ION BEAM FACILITIES IN EUROPE

The infrastructure co-operation network LEIF co-ordinates the activities of 8 low-energy ion beam facilities situated in seven different European countries. A description of the installations and of the services offered by the infrastructures is given below. The infrastructures are:

At present 4 out of 8 infrastructures (CIRIL, HMI, MSL, UAA) provide access for external users on a regular basis, organised by individual program Committees. The other infrastructures 'self-organise' this service in form of collaborations or provide ion beams for internal users. All infrastructures participate in the technological developments necessary to improve the infrastructure performance. In view of a "Distributed Large Scale Facility for Low-Energy Ion Beams'', three further infrastructures are included, thus increasing the number of installations to eleven:

  • Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik Heidelberg (MPIK), Germany
  • Leopold Franzens Universität Innsbruck (UIBK), Austria
  • Forschungszentrum Rossendorf (FZR), Germany.

These infrastructures have recently developed (or will develop) an instrumentation (EBIT, EBIS, Cluster sources), which is complementary to the existing one and improves the service offered to users. Five infrastructures (CIRIL, MSL, QUB, UAA, and MPIK) have proposed to participate in a Transnational Access Activity, where the beam time attribution will be managed by a central Beam distribution Committee.
